At the 2nd verse it sounds like the strings are going to start evening out and playing the same chord progression as the guitar, but with each subsequent chord in the verse you hear it morph and change as more and more strange harmonies are introduced.
They are in the background and you might not even notice then at first, but they keep these droning, dense, insanely dissonant chords going underneath while the rest of the music plays a pretty standard chord progression by comparison. It would be a pretty normal, almost singer songwriter sounding track if it weren't for Johnny Greenwood's Penderecki-esque strings. This is the song I show any of my friends who haven't heard a Radiohead song before.
